While
the majority of our projects have been residential, we have also done commercial
work. Paradise Nails, located in Shakopee, MN, was our latest commercial
project. This nail salon was a build-out which we completed in about three
months. The owners Dawn and Mike Johnson earned a great deal of sweat equity by
doing most of the finishing work themselves. Sweat equity is an option on all of
our projects. Mike is a licensed plumber; consequently, he he did the plumbing
as well.
 Paradise
Nails was the first tenant in the space, so this build-out included flat work
along with the rest of the trades. There was one existing wall which we had to
dismantle to get our wiring run. All the other walls were built by us.
 The
project called for one large room up front, a bathroom with a closet, a utility
room, a tanning room and massage room.
The main difference between residential and commercial work are the rules
and regulations. Because the general public will be using this retail space,
safety concerns are a top priority with the city inspectors and other
governmental regulating agencies. This wasn't a problem, because we have always
maintained a good relationship with most every city building official that we
have had the occasion to work with over the years. If you happen to hear some
other contractor say that this particular city is screwed up or that city's
inspectors are a bunch of jerks, it may be a sign that there is a contractor who
did not take the time or energy to investigate the way things needed to be done.
